This image,
sent by Phoenix this Sunday, clearly shows layers of ice beneath the Mars
Lander itself. It gives me the impression that the ice recently warmed, and
water began flowing to lower spots on Mars's surface.
The same
happens on Earth when snow or ice melts and slowly vanishes. I believe these
are annual effects, not a one-time event millions of years ago. There are
seasons like winter and summer. The temperature differences are enough to
interact with the ice layers. This leads to surface erosion, gas release into
the atmosphere, and liquid water appearing on the surface.
Not
necessarily enough for rivers, but drop by drop, it melts, turns to gas, or
forms small pools. Gravity always pulls it to lower places, circulating
hydrogen in its three possible forms: frozen, liquid, and gas.
